Most residential sod installation projects in Calgary range from $1.50 to $3.50 per square foot installed, depending on yard access, soil condition, and total area. Smaller yards or properties needing significant soil amendment will fall on the higher end. We provide detailed quotes after an on-site assessment so there are no surprises. The ideal window for sod installation in Calgary runs from mid-May through late September when soil temperatures support root growth. Early summer installs give sod the longest growing season to establish before winter. Fall installs work well too, as cooler temperatures reduce water demand. We do not recommend installing sod after the first frost.
New sod begins bonding with the soil within seven to ten days when watered properly. Full root establishment typically takes three to four weeks during warm weather. During this period, avoid heavy foot traffic and follow a consistent watering schedule. You can test root hold by gently lifting a corner of the sod. If it resists, roots are taking hold.
Sod gives you a finished lawn in one day with immediate erosion control and curb appeal. Seed takes 8 to 12 weeks to fill in and requires careful watering, weed management, and restricted use during establishment. For most Calgary homeowners, sod is the faster, more reliable choice, especially for new construction or full lawn replacements where bare soil is exposed.
Water your new sod two to three times daily for the first two weeks, keeping the soil moist but not soaked. After week two, reduce to once daily. Avoid mowing until the sod has rooted, usually around the three-week mark. When you do mow, set your blade to the highest setting and remove no more than one-third of the grass height. Avoid foot traffic for the first ten days.
